Clarification on Summer Forecast

The effects of El Nino were a substantial contributory factor in the compilation of this summer's forecast, coupled with the PWS main program that looks at variables and trends within a partitioned piece of historical data.  There was encouraging confidence, especially following the success with the winter 2009/10 forecast, and the prediction by PWS of last year's poor summer, that this summer would be a 'favourable' summer, and not a washout as previous years.  There was never any suggestion that there would be wall to wall sunshine right from the word 'go' in June, merely, that there would be some decent spells of dry weather, accompanied by warm temperatures.  To a lesser extent, there will also be some cooler conditions with showers from time to time, but for summer 2010, we would over all, have the lion's share of the better weather.  There was also indications that 'sharp spikes' in the system pointed to extreme temperatures being reached, which gave rise to further encouraging confidence, that record temperatures were possible.
Also, that this summer would be a generally warm one, possibly sitting high up the 'charts' for warm summers, and there were indications it may well sit in the Top 5, and when you look back at the rest of Europe this summer, you'll see why that conclusion was drawn.

PWS has to conclude that anything else heard or read, was merely speculation; conjecture; hearsay; or 'spin', from other quarters keen to believe in a more than favourable summer.

I hope this clarifies our position.
